The Challenge Ahead:

The role will be based in EA’s offices in Guildford, directly reporting into the Associate General Counsel, Chief Privacy Officer based in Redwood Shores with a dotted line into the VP Legal, Europe and Asia.

Electronic Arts is seeking a lawyer to join the Company’s Player Privacy and Protection team to advise on privacy, data protection, security, and player protection. The ideal candidate is an effective and practical lawyer who can work with legal and business stakeholders to uphold player expectations and minimize privacy and data protection risk while also providing direct and global player privacy and protection advice and counselling to select business teams.

What a Legal Counsel - Privacy does at EA:

  • Responsible for ensuring EU, and LATAM player privacy requirements are included in global policies, contract templates and guidance provided to business teams. This includes:
    • Developing and/or maintaining deep expertise in EU and LATAM privacy, data protection and data security laws, including keeping track of enforcement actions, industry practice and regulatory guidance and evaluating their impact on EA;
    • Consulting with legal stakeholders on EU and LATAM data security legal requirements;
    • Consulting with legal stakeholders on EU and LATAM privacy requirements and best practices, including those applicable to social networking, cookie banners, obtaining relevant certifications, compliance with data subject rights, targeted and direct marketing, game development, contract templates, cloud services, analytics, anti-fraud and other processing activities with a privacy impact. Responsible for advising business partners in the EU and LATAM directly on complex player privacy matters from a global point of view;
    • Responsible for training legal and business stakeholders in the EU and LATAM on global player privacy and data protection issues;
    • Consult with Product Counsel and Approvals on player privacy and protection issues.
    • Responsible for developing and maintaining data processing documentation and retention policies for player data processing activities in the EU and LATAM as needed and establishing retention policies for the same.
  • Consult with EA’s Regional Counsel on agreements involving player and employee privacy and protection matters;
  • Consult with legal stakeholders on the development of policies, guidelines and processes relevant to employee privacy in the EU and LATAM;
  • Responsible for supporting trade associations and government affairs in the EU and LATAM on privacy and data protection regulatory positions and advocacy;
  • Responsible for managing escalated player complaints from players located in EU and LATAM in relation to privacy/data protection matters.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Qualified lawyer with a minimum of 2 years’ PQE;
  • In-house experience as a legal counsel working within the interactive entertainment sector is a must;
  • Demonstrable privacy background with experience in EU e-commerce/consumer protection law;
  • Demonstrable experience working in a multi-national organisation, providing privacy counsel across multiple jurisdictions within Europe and/or LATAM;
  • An in-depth knowledge of UK and EU Privacy legislation and relevant regulations and codes of practice is required;
  • You must be able to travel to the San Francisco office and the main European offices.

The next great EA Legal Counsel - Privacy also needs:

  • Commercial acumen: through the development of effective business relationships knows the key issues and challenges within the respective areas of the business supported. Can think strategically and has a good understanding of the wider business context, including strategy and goals, road maps, organisational performance, and financial processes, and is able to give legal advice within this forum and weigh up all the issues;
  • Client focus: consistently aims to meet and exceed client expectations, gives issues the appropriate priority, goes out of way to resolve legal issues raised. Has the ability to manage multiple clients and conflicting demands on time. Is comfortable challenging and influencing clients in a firm and convincing manner as appropriate;
  • Resourcefulness: finds ways to overcome barriers, is innovative and uses own initiative to find solutions to the legal issues. Builds an informal network of contacts and information sources, uses these, together with influencing skills to deliver;
  • Teamwork: cooperates, collaborates and works with others to achieve common goals. Fosters good working relationships with Legal colleagues to achieve shared goals and desired outcomes;
  • Personal effectiveness: has a ‘can do’ mentality, self-assured, proactive, open and flexible and will do what is required to get the job done. Needs to be self-motivated and able to deal with a number of tasks within tight deadlines. Has the confidence, maturity and credibility to clearly advise and give a risk assessment/judgement call or know when to bring in a manager to make that call.
