THE OPPORTUNITY

The Head of Disputes, UK & EMEA will lead the strategic direction of the ALT Disputes practice in the region.

In this senior role they will work closely with the Head of Disputes, Global and other Directors of ALT to establish and maintain a global offering that differentiates HSF from its competitors whilst enhancing the firm's global elite status.

The Head of Disputes will work with the Regional Disputes senior teams, to lead the legal and e-Discovery teams within ALT to high professional standards with a close eye on legal quality at all times.

They will also work closely with the Head of Disputes, Global and Senior Managers in Australia and Asia to ensure global alignment to best achieve the strategic aims of the business including in respect of resourcing, quality, processes, pricing, revenue and profitability across the Disputes practice.

Client Service Delivery

  • In consultation with the Director, UK, US & EMEA and Head of Disputes Global, develop and implement the strategic goals and associated business plan for the Disputes practice in the region, in line with the firm's wider strategic aims;
  • Manage, extend and improve the firm's existing legal services, including Legal Review, eDiscovery and technology capability as a highly valued and sizeable revenue earning business for the firm;
  • Lead on the development of new client products/service offerings for the ALT Disputes practice in the region; and lead on the development of existing product offerings to meet client need and with the objective of growing the business in the UK and EMEA;
  • Lead and manage the performance of the Disputes practice including quality of fee earning work, to ensure the best possible standards of service delivery.

Reporting

Proactive timely and accurate reporting to the Head of Disputes, Global (and the Directors of ALT where appropriate) on performance in the Region including in respect of:​

  • Finance/Revenue.

Business Development

  • Establish and maintain excellent working relationships with the GHoPs, RHoPs and Partners in the region to maximise the opportunity for the firm's clients to benefit from ALT services.

Strategic Leadership

  • Provide inspired leadership and clear direction to teams ensuring a collaborative approach to achieve the firm's objectives and promote a positive perception of HSF and ALT to clients and legal teams within the firm;
  • Leadership and development of a culture to support the attraction, development, performance and retention of the highest calibre employees;
  • Manage change as it impacts the teams in a way that minimises operational and client delivery disruption.

Financial Management

  • Innovate in the design of pricing solutions and proposals for client work to win business and maximise business growth; and keep methodology and approach to pricing constantly under review with reference to KPIs;
  • Oversee and approve pricing models and cost estimates, working with the ALT finance team and the HSF Disputes pricing team;
  • Manage recovery and profitability on all Disputes matters in the Region including in relation to write-offs, time recording, billing, discounts to rates and alternative pricing models;
  • Oversee excellent financial and matter management of Disputes matters in the Region;
  • Assist partners to understand the financial drivers for the ALT business;
  • Ensure global alignment to agreed principles and compliance with financial disciplines.

Risk Management

  • Ensure the business is aware of potential risks and that appropriate risk assessment is part of the process for taking on new work.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experienced qualified lawyer with a strong academic track record;
  • Commercially astute with a demonstrable track as a business leader;
  • Proven skills in operational business growth and planning, able to spot and develop new business opportunities;
  • People management skills in a law firm or commercial legal environment managing senior lawyers and other staff in and out of region;
  • Experience of resourcing, project managing and motivating large teams to tight deadlines;
  • High level of attention to detail with the ability to step back and see problems, opportunities and trends;
  • Strong creative and analytical ability, coupled with sound judgement to balance multiple factors and solve complex problems;
  • Strong IT literacy, including and aptitude for learning (and becoming proficient in) the use of new and innovative software and IT applications.
