The Mastercard Intellectual Property (IP) Team works collaboratively to protect the company’s innovation and brands around the world, in addition to mitigating IP risks. The team is looking for an experienced European patent attorney to join our dynamic IP team at Mastercard. This is a unique opportunity to play a vital role in the IP strategy of Mastercard for one of its major regions.

Role

The European IP counsel provides expert legal advice and support as part of Mastercard's Intellectual Property (IP) and Technology legal function to MasterCard's technology and product development groups based in Europe. The European IP regional counsel functions as part of the global IP team, as well as the Europe regional legal teams. Located in MasterCard’s London office, the successful candidate will provide services to Mastercard’s technology groups throughout the European region. The European IP regional counsel will work closely with technology groups located within the region, such as the Mobile Centre in London and the Chip Centre in Waterloo, Belgium, in addition to being the main IP contact with Mastercard Labs in Europe.

The European IP counsel establishes IP policies in the region, in particular with reference to the development of IP strategies to maximize protection in areas of growing importance to the business teams, such as standards organizations in the mobile space, partnerships and merchant relationships.

Responsibilities will include a wide variety of IP licensing matters, including:

  • Working closely with Mastercard’s rapidly evolving businesses on product development; patent prosecution, portfolio management and supervision of outside counsel;
  • Providing IP support for corporate acquisitions and transactions;
  • Litigation management and advising internal business clients on a broad range of IP, licensing and related legal issues;
  • Structuring, negotiating, and drafting technology license agreements; development and execution of IP strategy;
  • Providing legal services relating to Mastercard’s participation in technology standards groups (such as EMVCo, ISO. etc.);
  • Management of inventor recognition and IP educational programs;
  • Addressing complex IP legal issues; providing advice and counsel to the technology and product development teams on IP issues.

All About You

The successful candidate will be responsible for strategic patent prosecution and oversight of outside counsel. It would be a significant advantage to have experience in representing clients at Oppositions/Oral hearings/Appeals at the European Patent Office. The candidate may be expected to support matters relating to infringement, validity, patent litigation and licensing matters. Experience directly interacting with clients and preparing, filing and managing own files.

  • Advanced level of experience as a qualified European Patent Attorney, preferably also with experience as a UK qualified patent attorney (other jurisidictions will be considered for exceptional candidates);
  • Bachelor’s Degree in electronic engineering, physics, or computer science;
  • Candidates must have recent experience in patent prosecution and patent portfolio management, preferably in the fields of electronics or financial services;
  • Experience in technology, software or franchise licensing, and trademarks a plus;
  • It is preferred that candidates have a mix of private practice and in-house experience;
  • Individual must be self-motivated, be a team player, people-centric, entrepreneurial and results oriented;
  • Must be able to assume significant responsibility in a dynamic fast-paced environment, to prioritize and to work closely with clients as a true business partner/advisor;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required.
